[If anyone downloaded misc/physics/fluiddynamics.cpt.hqx from umich last week,
you might want to consider getting the new merry x mass virus vaccine.  It is
located in umich archives at util/virus/merryxmasvaccine.cpt.hqx and
util/virus/merryxmaskiller.sit.hqx.  The update should be out by the time
you read this (but you might check the creation date of the archive file
just to make sure).  We, here at info-mac, already have the latest version of
the vaccine:

This application lets users selectively disable and re-enable certain
devices on the Apple Desktop Bus. I wrote this application because I
have a joystick which is not completely idle (The pointer moves and
sometimes the mouse button doesn't stay down when both mouse and
joystick are connected, i.e. a mouse up event while I still hold down
the mouse button).  An INIT (system extension) will disable
devices on startup using a preferences file saved with the ADBManager.

"Alice setup," is a concise guide that steps you through the configuration
of Alice/T2/Charon - a full-fledged Macintosh FidoNet point system. This
guide does not attempt to explain FidoNet. It does present enough
information to configure this trio without the original manuals. A couple
of obscure "gotcha's" are explained. This should be enough to allow a user
to successfully poll their host BBS for mail, and then extract the inbound
mail packets. Alice & T2 are contained in one archive; Charon in another.

Celtic Font

Several people on the net have expressed interest in a Celtic
font.

This is a bitmapped font called Celtic that I came across several
years ago.  Do documentation was available with it so I know not
of its origins.  As indicated by the name, it is appropriate for
Celtic/Gaelic style display and printing.

It is compressed as a Self Extracting Archive.

Drag-and-drop application kit for THINK C 5.0 and 6.0.

Dragonsmith lets THINK C programmers easily create drag-and-drop
applications (or "dragons") for use with System 7.  It features an
object-oriented class "Dragon" which may be subclassed to provide
any batch-type action desired.  All source code is included.

Version 1.1.1 is a bug-fix and THINK C 6.0 compatibility release
only.  No new features have been added, and the documentation has
not been changed from version 1.1.

 This submission is a HyperCard 2.1 stack demos some string matching
routines, including Soundex. The routines can be used to generate
simplified versions of a string which can then be used to compare "similar"
strings. A "fuzzy" match algorithm is also included, this scores the
similarity between 2 strings based on user-defined penalties for character
insertion and substitution.

 These XFCNs are based on code freely available on the net, and are
therefore public domain. Sample HyperTalk calls, notes and C source code
are in the stack.

Hello, fellow Mac food-lovers!

This small Mangia! file contains all of the recipes (21) found in the
booklets, "The Story Behind the Legendary Liqueur" (10 recipes; c1987,
Irish Mist Liqueur) and "Irish Mist goes with Strawberries" (12 recipes;
no copyright indicated but later than "The Story...") produced by the
makers of Irish Mist Liqueur.  The recipes are all desserts.  One recipe
(Irish Mist Trifle) is duplicated in both books so I used the one in
"Strawberries" for balance.  Also included as "recipes" are the somewhat
long "Story Behind the Legendary Liqueur" and the shorter "Irish Mist goes
with strawberries" texts found in their respective books just to keep in
the spirit.  They file at the top and are marked with asterisks.

Included in this binhexed Compact Pro archive are this text and the recipe
file itself.  The recipe file may contain some ingredients that aren't in
the "standard" Mangia! dictionary and the sources are definitely NOT
there.  Don't worry, Mangia! is intelligent enough to update your
dictionary on its own (this may not be true of the demo).

This file updates the one already in the archives (/info-mac/nms/ directory).

Hi, I noticed that thie latest version of the full Resorcerer demo
in info-mac/prog is 1.1. Here is the latest update I could find to
this commercial Resource Editor.

It has all the functions of the fully working editor except it will
not allow you to save any changes to disk. It is beyond the hobbyist
but the serious programmer should have a good look at this excellent
resource editor (beyond the hobbyist because the price is $US 256)

Anyway enjoy this offering.

Here is a revision of a pd game. The creator of this game put it out with
the invitation that other folks add to it, which is what's happened. One
person in California revised it to use the Simpson icons that I made (you
have volumes 1 and 2, and I'm working on a 3rd collection, due by June of
this year), and he sent a copy to me. I promptly revised it some more, and
am sending you the result.

This game involves matching tiles, which then disappear. The object is to
match all the tiles, to uncover the picture beneath. I think it would be a
worthy addition to your Mac archives.

Tarantula isn't easy to win but I've added some options to
help with that.

Requirements:  a Mac and System 6 or 7.  Tarantula supports
all color depths as well as black and white.

ZoomToCursor is a utility that helps you find a lost cursor on a big or
sluggish screen. It works sort of like the homing device from a bad
science-fiction movie. When you press its key combination (cmd-shift-0), it
quickly draws a set of bold concentric circles of decreasing size onto the
screen, centered on the cursor. The effect is a little like the way the
Finder "zooms" windows open and closed, except without the Finder's
subtlety.

to install it into your System file. If you are already using the cmd-
shift-0 combination, you can change ZoomToCursor's resource ID to something

Hello there...

I have a question.  I thought that QuickTime 1.6.1 allowed for a slightly
bigger 240 X 320 or so, picture size when recording movies.

I have a videospigot in my Centris 650, and when I try to record movies, it
flashes at this "bigger" size and then reverts back to the old QuickTime
1.0 size 160X whatever.

Is this a bug or a problem with me VideoSpigot?  If this is unchangeable I
don't really mind since I can record at 30fps on my centris, but if I could
get the picture to this slightly bigger size then I would be even happier.

1.  I am using the geoport analog adapter and the bundled fax software.  Is
there an option to have the fax and phone share the same line?  I would

2. Is there a 14,400 fax/modem upgrade planned?  Will it be software or
hardware?

3.  The speech recognition software was not able to start up and run when a
fax was being sent and did not start up after it was finished.  Has anyone
else had problems with this?

Luis, I've plenty of Mac II upgrade experience. It was for my wife, so
cost wasn't a consideration either. Durn it.

1. ROM: Get the FDHD upgrade from Apple. This'll give you a high density
   floppy drive and a set of IIx ROMs.

2. Accelerator: DayStar seems to be the most transparent. I got Leslye
   a 40MHz 030 card wih 40MHz FPU. Not as fast as her new C650, but I
   wasn't comfy taking that old II any further.

4. Memory: I gave her 20MB via four 4M PAL SIMMs. Kept four 1Ms. You
   must buy the special PAL SIMMs. And put them in Bank B. (I think.
   Don't worry about it. If they don't work in one bank, put 'em in
   the other one). And you must fill a bank with the same size SIMMs.

5. 32bit Enabler: Yup, you need one. The IIx ROMs aren't 32bit clean.
   Either Connectix's MODE32 or Apple's 32bit Enabler. I've found
   bigtime problems with Apple's product and have stuck with MODE32.
   Both are free.

6. HD: Get rid of the 40M and get at least 200. Today's software eats
   disk space.

7. Graphics: You might want to swap out the graphics card for a 24-bit
   accelerated one. We did. The one problem with it was that it didn't
   kick in until 32bit Quickdraw loaded, rather late in the startup
   process. So startup screens come up monochrome.

I have just tried installing an Apple //e card in a LCIII, with a non Apple
harddisk.
I was unable to get the software to recognise ProDOS partitions on the drive.
After trying several different hard disk drivers, I tried using an Apple
hard disk (with an Apple driver) - now I was able to use ProDOS partitions.
I then tried putting a different driver on the Apple drive - leaving the
partitions untouched - and again the software didn't recognize the
partitions. I tried several different drivers, all with the same result. I
then switched back to the Apple driver, and could use the ProDOS partitions
again.
This looks like the ProDOS partitions are not getting mounted unless I use
the Apple driver. Does anyone know if this is correct, or if //e card
software only works with the Apple driver?
I need to use the //e card with the disk that is in the LCIII. Does anyone
know of a hard disk driver, that will work with the Apple //e card and a
non Apple hard disk?

You might consider using DiskFit Pro by Dantz. We use it at work to backup
several drives on our network. Basically, it's preset to do our backups
every night. The software does a fast copy of all the files that have
changed since the last backup.

One problem you might encounter is that DiskFit Pro likes to make the
destination disk exactly like the original. If you have multiple original
disks that you're backing up to one large destination (or vice-versa), you
might run across some problems. In this case, you'd want to look at some of
the file synchronization software such as PowerMerge.

backup a hard drive to optical disk.  No mention of the size of
the disk--if it's a gigabyte monster then some kind of software would
be a good idea; but if the whole hard disk contents will fit on one
optical disk, I recommend the method I use to back up my two hard
drives to Syquest cartridges: buy CopyDoubler and just do a Finder
drag, using Smart Copy, which copies only files that have changed
or are new, saving an enormous amount of time.  Click, drag, click,
wait five minutes or so, and you're done.  No compression with this
method of course--which I prefer.

My girlfriend is looking for a cross stitch designer program.  She'd like to
be able to design a pattern in color, with little x's to just like the final
product will look, then view/print it in the pattern that cross stitch people
really use on a regular basis.  She'd also like to have it give her standard
DMC thread color numbers so she doesn't have to worry about matching colors.

ALSO.... she'd like to be able to import pictures and have the program
generate cross stitch patterns from that.  She'd like to be able to scale the
image so that she can get a reasonable rendering of the original.

ALSO.... she'd like to be able to select different backing types and colors
so that she can have even more realistic images.

Is there such a monster?  Is there a monster that has some of these
capabilities?  Commercial, or, if the heavens are gracious to me, via
anonymous FTP.

If such a monster doesn't exist, would there be enough interest out there in
such a program if I were to embark upon the task of producing one?

DOORs are a standard (yeah, right!) for external applications among BBSs in
the PC world. PC Board and WildCat are the first two BBS software packages
that come to mind who use this type of external, though there are a slew of
others.

DOORs are used for games, off-line reader interfaces, surveys and whatever
anyone might want to add to a BBS.

If I understand you correctly, you're dialing into a BBS that allows access
to some kind of network. If, when you enter the DOOR, you're getting a
boatload of gibberish, your problem may be due to not being able to display
ANSI graphics.

Nothing wrong with Sparkle 1.7, Jon. I just Fetched it, and the MPEG
with the lovely Ms Eleniak plays as expected.

Do you have all the required goodies as listed in the readme? Did you
use the execrable Binhex4 program to decode the hqx?

The type 1 error can indicate a munged program. Try to get it again.

I have been using FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit for some time now, and some
time ago formatted an Apple 160Mb disc (CDC Origin) in a Mac IIx with
Radius Rocket with HDT.  The result was that it took forever to boot on
startup, and when I eventually reformatted with the Apple formatter again
(with some difficulty), the startup time returned to normal.  An Apple
service technician told me that on no account should Apple disks be
formatted with anything other than the Apple formatter, while the
Australian agents for HDT say there is no problem.  I have just got a new
Quadra 840AV with a 1G disk, and would prefer to format with HDT for the
partitioning and mounting convenience, but would hate to repeat the
problems I had with the IIx, so can anyone throw any light on this one?

Subject: Fullwrite for LW8.1 and spaces in printing mixed font words

I recently changed FWP as suggested in order to use the LaserWriter 8.1
Driver. Since then I have had trouble when I print a 'word' that contains a
goulash of symbol and geneva fonts, regular case, superscripts and
subscripts. Huge gaping hole appear in the middle of the 'word' usually
between a change of font. Needless to say they did not appear this way on
the screen

Well, so I said, never mind, I will just use the old 7 driver.
This did not help, I still got the gaping holes.

So I went back to my unaltered version of FWP1.5s and the 7 driver printed
hunky dory. Is there something that has to be added/changed to get FWP for
LW8.1 to behave?

Help needed:

I upgraded my PB 180 with a Fujitsu 240 MB internal disk. Since then I
encounter
multiple hardware and software problems. In order to isolate individual
"unrelated" problems I would like to get some suggestions about the nature of
the following problem:

I have an external Syquest connected to my PB 180. All cardridges are formatted
with Silverlining 5.31. I am mounting the cardridges with SCSI Probe 3.5. When
mounting and unmounting different cardridges sometimes the finder freezes and
the "red" light on the Syquest drive remains on after removal of the disk from
the drive. This happens also after shift-boot !!
Any explanation ?

At present the first cardridge to be mounted after booting requires SCSI Probe

Can someone explain the basics of mounting and unmounting of cardridges or

me to any info material ? Where is the driver located, on the disk, in the
drive
or in the system ?

I would also like to know if there is any need to use compatible drivers for

internal disk and the external Syquest drive? Currently my new internal disk is
formatted with Apple HD SC Setup 3.0 (for A/UX ?).

You have to buy it - I believe APDA has it as part of the TCP/IP Connection
for mac for $59.00, but I got it (2.0 that is) as licenced software
included in Adam Engst's book _The Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh_.
(Also includes Eudora, Fetch, Interslip, 2 week free SLIP account, and
other free/shareware programs.) All for $29.95 + tax. Great book - I
recommend it highly.

$52, purchase any one of a number of utilities like VersaTerm
or TCP/Connect II or MicroPhone Pro 5.0 that include it, or you
can get it bundled with my Internet book, Internet Starter Kit
for Macintosh for about $30. The book is widely available in
bookstrores and if you send email to [e-mail] you can

I have never had a problem calling any of the local bulletin boards in my area
but recently I have tried to join several that require callback verification.
In case you don't know, this means that they call me back with their modem to
verify that my phone number is what I say it is. Anyway, I cannot connect with
any of these boards when they call me but have no problem calling them. It
sounds to me like the modems are trying to negotiate a speed (from the change
in tone I hear) but then after a while my modem gives up and tells me
NO CARRIER. My modem is an ATI 2400etc/e and the settings are as follows:

According to the Q&A stack, Eudora can be used for more than one person by
saving messages either on different floppy disks or differnet folders.

You might want to ask what the latest version is and if they could send it
to you with the instructions and everything.  The instructions explain how
to set up Eudora for more than one user.

...and also from the manual:

Doing the above (I believe) puts you on a mailing list for what is

As I said in a previous message, I have had NO problems with the LL144e
modem.  It has sent and received faxes nicely, the data transfer rates
have been very good.  My ONLY problem was connecting to a SLIP server.
This as it turned out was NOT the modems fault, but the softwares
fault.  It was not picking up the IP address from the slip server. If
I was patient and waited for the SLIP program to giveup I could then
manually enter the IP address listed by the server.  As of now I can
connect and use all the programs I have missed for the last few months.
I have not seen a problem with speeds as has been suggested. I have not had
a problem with noisy lines.  While I have not had much experience with
more expensive modems, I find it hard to believe that there is that much of
a difference between the way these modems connect and transfer data.

B ut of course that's all IMHO.

   Another one of those beginning-of-year questions to clean up from the year

   I have a Mac Plus with a logic-board problem; it handles 256K SIMMs quite
nicely but will not work with 1MB SIMMs (in 2.5M _or_ 4M configurations; and
yes, I clipped the resistor). I've tried different SIMMs, etc., etc., to no
avail, so I assume there is a problem with the motherboard.

   Seems to me that there are '030 accelerators out there for the Plus that
   have
their own RAM slots, but (of course) I can't find any references in my files
(or
on the stacks of magazines on the floor in the corner of my office, for all
that...). Since it really isn't worth buying another motherboard, this might be
a reasonable alternative, and get a little more life out of the poor thing.

   If anyone knows of or has experience with accelerators for the Plus with

I just received an upgrade offer for Software Venture's MicroPhone Pro.
What's interesting is a fairly complete TCP/IP facility. I won't
go into the MP details, which are relatively well known--pretty good
scriptable terminal emulation & data transfer, mainly.

The new version, MP Pro 2.0 [SRP $295; upgrade offer $49.95; street $?]
supports all the usual terminal/modem stuff as well as including MacTCP,
SLIP (which one? don't know), FTP (Fetch), TurboGopher, mail, news,
a graphical Telnet tool.

This info all from their letter, not direct experience.

MP Pro 1.0 had a Telnet tool, but I don't recall that it included MacTCP,
and it certainly didn't have SLIP.

All of this could be put together with a combo of shareware, freeware and
aceware, I suppose, but it's interesting that it's now available mainstream
from a company with a pretty decent track record of support (and existence!).

BTW, they offer unspecified fax software for an extra $10. Turns out it's
FaxSTF 2.2.3. Probably a better idea to order FaxSTF 3.0 from one of the
discounters, since STF doesn't have an economical upgrade program.

Have you seen or heard of Eudora?

It works with a POP3 demon on the Unix box to provide SMTP in/out mail for
your Mac and IBM Compatibles running Windows. There is a freeware version
(1.4.1) available from Qualcomm's FTP site (ftp.qualcomm.com), and a
commercial version (2.0) from the same company. You can find ordering
information and a list of feature differences between the freeware and
commercial versions at the same location.

BTW: I'm using it right now to send you this note.

I have DOS software that talks to a microprocessor development system that
normally connects to the parallel port on a PC. I'd like to run the DOS
software in SoftPC and use a serial to parallel converter to connect my Mac
serial port to the parallel port of the development system. Has anyone
attempted this and did it work?

Am told that DOS allows you to reassign one port to another such as making
the parallel port data go out the serial port. Is the SoftPC parallel port

A few days ago, I posted a request for information about the use of
greyscale vs black & white in the Stylewriter II Print dialogue box.

I did not have one response with advice, but had several requests for
a summary.

I put this down to one or more of the following possibilities:

1)  A stupid question.  [probably]
2)  Badly worded or incoherent question. [probably]
3)  No one knows the answer. [unlikely]
4)  No one uses the StyleWriter and therefore uninterested.
5)  In FAQ. [looked at the more obvious FAQs, in vain.]
6)  No one read the relevant digest -- I cannot remember the number.
7)  Everyone working too hard -- no time to respond. [almost certainly]
8)  No (Q) in the Subject line.
9)  100s of helpful messages mailed but none got through.
10) UK in the "doghouse". [there would be lots of good reasons]
11) I forgot to write "please" and that "I would be grateful for an answer".

In case no.2 was one reason, I will rephrase the question and try to be
much more succinct.

In the Print dialogue box for the StyleWriter II, one can use the
Greyscale or Black & White menu items. Apple's advice in the SW manual
and the ReadMe which comes with the latest driver is apparently
contradictory, with one advising the use of B & W for text and the
other recommending the use of greyscale for best printing results.
In the latter example, there is no mention of text or non-text.

My question is simple: which setting should I use, assuming textual
output, to maximise the life of the StyleWriter cartridge?
(There was another question concerning the quality of output, but I
can test this for myself.)

I would appreciate receiving some information about this and will
post a summary if the second attempt at eliciting a reply is
successful.

I have ben having a problem de-binhexing some larger files (over 300K)

Smaller files debinhex with no trouble.  What happens is I get an error
message sayig first that the resource fork could not be checked, and next
a message saying I could not continue because of a CRC error.

I am getting the files through a dial-up connextion, using my terminal
program.

I do not believe there were any transmition errors... I am using Stuffit
Expander 3.0.7.

Any help would be appreciated.

I just acquired a Archive VP 60e SCSI tape drive that was OEM'd for
VINES (of Banyan/Vines fame). Everything SCSI utility I have recognize
the device just fine... actually call it a Viper 60, but nothing seems
to want to mount it! One thing that I have not tried is disabling
AccessPC. MacTools 3.0 recognizes it as well but it won't let me backup
anything to it... because it is not mounted!

This all makes sense... but how do I mount it. I have Drive7, DiskMaker
1.6 andother formatterutils... but nothing will touch this device!

Please.... cna someonetell mewhat dumb thing amI not doing here?

Conclusion: Versione 3.0 of Shut Down Items works perfectly even on a Plus
and it' a good replacement for all those who cannot use AutoPower On/Off or
ADB related power strips! I do NOT have to select this option every time to
automatically shut down the Mac as it has the possibility to keep this
feature on at every startup.

I have already sent my shareware contribution!

I love CopyDoubler too, but I prefer Now Compress to AutoDoubler on my PB
170. I can't vouch for other systems. I read the MacUser article, but I had
different results in my own recent test. I own SuperDoubler, StuffIt Deluxe,
and Now Compress. On my 170, Now is definitely the fastest for every day
use. It has the slowest compressor, but it uncompresses seconds faster than
even AutoDoubler. (While I love StuffIt and keep the engine running all the
time, Spacesaver is truly slow.). The only problem with Now Compress is that
it has a high Ram overhead. But once I get RamDoubler, I'm hoping it won't
bother me as much. Good luck.

Subject: won't save gif as pict0 follow up

    Search info-mac cdrom II and found application, jpeg, that converted
gifs to jpegs. Opening these, you could save as pict0's with JpegView 2.0.
   I use the filename DeskPicture for the pict0 and put it in system
folder, while !DeskPict 1.1 is in my extension folder. This works in
system 7.1.
   I now have a desktop with a stunning view from hubble space telescope

Hi all,
What is required in the way of software for me to run SLIP from
my Mac Plus to a SGI unix box? The machines are about 2 metres apart,
in the same office ...

Also, is a standard Mac modem cable required, or some special wiring
needed?

Any help and/or stories of success or failure would be appreciated!

Unfortunately it *can* be much more expensive than a new unit. The
per-unit labor costs for assembling a large batch of new products
>From new parts is less than the cost of having a trained technician
diagnose a customer's returned unit and decide what part to replace.

I know it doesn't sound like a hard job, but it does require more
training than the assembly line work and does consume more time per
unit.

I'm not saying I agree with LaCie's policy, but as someone who
has been involved in a hardware business I do understand their
problem.

Sometimes you take a loss on the repair jobs with the hope of getting
future business from the customer.
